What is chili powder?

Chili powder is a spice blend commonly used in various cuisines, particularly in Mexican and Southwestern dishes. Not only does it add flavor and color, but it also brings heat to meals (mild to hot), like in this taco seasoning recipe. It all depends on what type of chili pepper is used.

Typical spices in chili powder are ground dried chilies, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and paprika.

how is Chili Powder used in cooking?

Chili powder is incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways in cooking:

  • Taco seasoning: As a key component, it adds bold flavor to tacos, burritos, and other Mexican dishes.
  • Soups and stews: Additionally, it brings depth and warmth to chili and other hearty dishes.
  • Marinades and rubs: Moreover, chili powder enhances the flavor of meats and vegetables, making them more vibrant.
  • Salsas: In both fresh and cooked salsas, chili powder provides the perfect balance of heat and flavor.

5 Reasons to make your own taco seasoning:

Are you still looking for more reasons to ditch the commercially produced store-bought mixes and make your own healthy taco seasoning blend? Read on to see what other less-than-healthy substances are lurking in the mix.

  • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): Primarily, MSG is used to enhance umami flavor and intensify the overall taste of the seasoning. However, some individuals may be sensitive to it, experiencing symptoms like headaches or sweating.
  • Anti-Caking Agents (e.g., Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Silicate): These ingredients help prevent clumping and keep the seasoning free-flowing. That said, some people prefer to avoid synthetic chemicals in their food.
  • Modified Food Starch: Typically, this is used as a thickener and stabilizer to improve the texture and consistency of the seasoning. Nonetheless, it is a highly processed ingredient, often derived from GMO sources.
  • Artificial Flavorings: In addition, artificial flavorings are added to enhance or mimic natural flavors, such as chili, garlic, and onion. Unfortunately, these can sometimes contain synthetic chemicals that some consumers may want to avoid.
  • Sugar or High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS): Moreover, added sugars, such as HFCS, help balance the heat in taco seasoning. However, for those following low-carb or diabetic-friendly diets, this can be an undesirable ingredient.

How to make this recipe:

  • Simply, combine all ingredients in a small bowl, mix well
  • If making tacos, brown meat, add seasoning and water. Heat, stirring to blend, adding additional water as necessary for desired consistency.

What to serve as a side dish:

  • Serve with favorite taco toppers such as shredded cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce
  • Guacamole is also a favorite, and a healthy choice
  • choose from assorted tortillas (flour, corn, or healthier wraps made from whole grains)
  • seasoned yellow rice is also a great side dish in keeping with the Mexican flavors

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why should I make my own taco seasoning mix?

Above all, it allows you to control the flavors and quality of ingredients. You can adjust the heat level, reduce salt, or avoid preservatives and additives found in store-bought versions.

What ingredients are needed for homemade taco seasoning?

A basic taco seasoning mix typically includes chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, oregano, and crushed red pepper flakes. In this Best Taco Seasoning Recipe, I added salt and omitted the red pepper flakes (to decrease the heat). Smoked paprika is a great addition if you wanted a smokey flavor to your mix.

How long does homemade taco seasoning last?

When stored in an airtight container, your homemade taco seasoning can last up to 6 months in a cool, dry place. For optimal freshness, store it away from heat and light to preserve its flavor and potency.

Can I make taco seasoning in bulk?

Yes, making taco seasoning in bulk is a great idea and will save you tons of time in the kitchen! Simply multiply the ingredients by the number of servings you want to make. Keep in mind that this recipe makes enough for 3 lbs. of meat. Just be sure to store the seasoning properly to maintain its flavor.

How much homemade taco seasoning should I use per pound of meat?

Generally, about 2 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning is enough for one pound of meat. However, you can adjust this based on how flavorful you want your tacos to be. If you prefer a stronger flavor, you can add more seasoning to taste.

For Making Tacos

  • Brown ground chuck (or protein of choice) until no pink is seen and drain fat.
  • Sprinkle with taco seasoning mix, and stir well to combine.
  • Add 1 – 1 ½ cups water (adding a small amount at a time until desired consistency is reached) and heat until thickened and bubbly.
  • Serve on warm tortillas, and top with favorite toppings such as shredded cheddar cheese, diced tomato, lettuce, etc. Guacamole is also delicious!

Notes

 1) Adding about 1/4 cup milk to the pan when cooking helps to break down the proteins in the beef and renders a more tender bite without any hard clumps.  Don’t worry, it will be removed when draining the fat from the meat.
